Agriturismo in Tuscany

Tuscany is a joy to explore! The garden of Italy is waiting for you: from art centres to small hilltop medieval villages, from the sea to the mountains and thermal towns, immersed in verdant and peaceful countryside.

The Agriturismo Marciano is set in the centre of classic Tuscany, just 2km to the historical centre of medieval Siena and with our information we will try to provide you with some hints to organize daily trips during your stay in our house.

Besides the historical centre of Siena, easily accessible from the Agriturismo Marciano on foot (45 minutes away), by taxi or by car (5 minutes away), and by bike (20 minutes away), you can visit other art towns, and have a wonderful day out:

  1. Florence, 60Km away, can be reached by bus (in 1 hour) or by car (in 1 hour and 10 minutes);
  2. Lucca and Pisa, 130 Km away, can be reached in one hour and a half by car;
  3. Arezzo, 60Km away, can be reached by bus (in 1hour and 20 minutes) and by car;
  4. Grosseto, 80 Km away, can be reached by car or by bus (in 1 hour).

For those fond of landscaped hills, small ancient towns and wine producing farms, we suggest:

The region of Chianti Classico with its lovely hilltop towns such as Castellina in Chianti, 20Km away, Greve in Chianti, 45 Km away, its wineries that offer guided visits and wine tasting (to be booked in advance), ancient castles such as Brolio, 22Km away, Bossi, 18km away, Certosa di Pontignano 10 Km away, as well as the rural landscapes of gentle hills covered with vineyards and olive groves, surrounded by century-old woods;

The region of Crete Senesi, just 15 km away, a unique and wonderful landscape with rolling hills planted with wheat, its ravines, its ancient villages and the magnificent Abbey of Monte Oliveto Maggiore;

The region of Val d'Orcia with its breathtaking landscapes of perfect beauty, where with a wonderful day out, following a circular itinerary of 150km, you can visit medieval Montalcino with its wineries and wine tasting, the spiritual centre of Abbazia di Sant'Antimo, the papal town of Pienza, the capital of Tuscan pecorino, and the Renaissance town of Montepulciano (the pearl of the sixteenth century) where you can taste the typical "pici", a type of pasta made to an original local recipe;

The region of Val d'Elsa where with a wonderful day out, following a round trip of 150km, you can visit the medieval fortress of Monteriggioni, Colle Val'Elsa, the town of crystal, the superb Etruscan town of Volterra, and San Gimignano, with its medieval towers, is registered in Unesco's World and Cultural Heritage. From San Gimignano to Siena it takes just 45 minutes.

For those who are fond of mountains, with one hour and twenty minutes' drive you can reach by car the top of Monte Amiata (1738m a.s.l.) with its green meadows brimming with colourful flowers, ancient forests of beech and chestnut, and its geysers. Along the way, you can't miss a stop in the medieval village of Bagno Vignoni, with its natural thermal pool dating back to 1500, in the center of the main square.

From the Agriturismo Marciano, with one hour and 30 minutes' drive (90 km away), you can reach the wonderful Tyrrhenian Coast with its beautiful sandy beaches (to be noted the Bay of Baratti, with its pinewoods, and Follonica with long stretches of sand and beach facilities). Driving back to Siena, one can visit the Renaissance town of Massa Marittima, and the mystic Abbazia di San Galgano, particularly suggestive at sunset.

It is well to remember that the region of Siena boasts an ancient thermal tradition dating back to the Etruscans and to the Romans. Recent archaeological findings confirm the existence of a large number of baths, spas and thermal swimming pools in places whose reputation, transmitted through the centuries, has arrived intact to the present day. Rapolano terme, 20 Km from Marciano, with its spas rich in pools of fresh, warm, and hot sulphurous waters, is especially suitable for skin cleansing; Bagni di Petriolo, 25 Km away, with its ancient spa with free access, where you can swim in the small natural pools of hot water and cool off in the Merse river that flows besides the pools.

For bike lovers we suggest that 4 km from Agriturismo Marciano you can follow the itinerary of Eroica, a cycling touristic tour famous all over the world, whose four routes, mostly on dirt roads, wind through some of the most beautiful areas of Tuscany: Chianti, Val d'Orcia, the Crete Senesi and Val di Merse.
